Why Is My Phone Vibrating Randomly? Find the Phantom Buzz
Catch the app or setting behind a random buzz on iPhone or Android, from dismissed notifications and charging to Music Haptics, then turn off only that source.

Why is my phone vibrating when nothing shows on the screen? Usually it’s a missed alert: a notification that cleared itself, a system alert, or a haptic tied to charging, typing or music. A failing motor is rare. Find the trigger and turn off only that.
Menus vary by phone and software version; if one differs, search Settings.
Why Is My Phone Vibrating Randomly? Match the Buzz to a Cause
Random buzzing is rarely random: the timing usually points to the cause.
| When it buzzes | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Plugging in, or on a pad | Charging vibration, a reconnecting cable, moisture |
| Nothing on screen afterward | A dismissed notification or a no-banner app |
| At regular intervals | A repeating emergency, item or app alert |
| Once, late in the day | A low-battery or Adaptive Power alert |
| During a song or while typing | Music Haptics, media vibration or keyboard haptics |
| With a tracker alert | Your AirTag, a borrowed item or an unknown tag |
| Buzzes but never rings | Vibrate or Silent mode |
| Nonstop, even after a restart | An app or system alert, rarely the motor |
On Android, turn on notification history now, so there’s a record the next time you ask “why is my phone vibrating?”
Why Is My Phone Vibrating but No Notifications Show Up?
A buzz with a blank screen usually means a notification came and went.
Android: turn on notification history first
On a Pixel, turn on Settings > Notifications > Notification history > Use notification history. Google’s notification history help says it records nothing until it’s on; then it keeps what you dismissed in the last 24 hours.
On a Galaxy, it’s under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. If your phone lacks it or it was never on, sort Settings > Notifications > App notifications by Most recent; the top app is your suspect.
Touch and hold that app’s notification and choose Silent: no sound, no vibration.
iPhone: no history, but two clues
iPhone keeps no record of cleared notifications. Notification Center (swipe down from the top-left) shows only uncleared ones. For per-app counts, see Notifications under Settings > Screen Time (tap the daily average graph); App & Website Activity must be on.
Also check Settings > Notifications > [app]: if Lock Screen, Notification Center and Banners are off but Sounds is on, the alert has nowhere to show. Turn Sounds off and see if the buzzing stops.
Why Is My Phone Vibrating When It Charges?
On any phone, a cable that keeps dropping out buzzes each time it reconnects, even an iPhone in Silent mode. Check the port with a light for lint (power off; use a wooden toothpick, never metal), then try another cable and adapter. That often settles “why is my phone vibrating on the charger?”
To silence the plug-in buzz on a Pixel, turn off Charging sounds and vibration (Settings > Sound & vibration, under System sounds & vibrations). On a Galaxy, see Settings > Sounds and vibration > System sound/vibration control.

Wireless pads add a loop: Apple’s wireless charging guide warns a vibrating iPhone can shift on the mat and stop charging. Center it face up; if it keeps sliding, Apple suggests Do Not Disturb or a case.
Water-resistant Galaxy phones and iPhone XS, XR and later stop charging and alert you when they sense liquid in the port. Unplug, tap the phone gently against your hand, port down, and let it air-dry at least 30 minutes. Never use heat, compressed air, rice or a cotton swab.
Buzzes That Repeat: Emergency Reminders and Battery Alerts
On a Pixel, Settings > Notifications > Wireless Emergency Alerts has an Alert reminder (once, every 2 or 15 minutes, or off) and its own vibration switch. Options vary by country, and some US national alerts can’t be turned off.
Why is my phone vibrating once, late in the day? Often it’s the low-battery warning. On iPhone 15 Pro and later, Adaptive Power also alerts you the first time it turns on and on high-drain days. Turning off Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power Notifications stops the alerts, not the feature.
Why Is My Phone Vibrating When I Play Music or Type?
Music Haptics on iPhone
If an iPhone taps along with a song, Music Haptics is on. This iOS 18 accessibility feature for deaf and hard-of-hearing users plays taps, textures and refined vibrations synced to the audio, per Apple’s Music Haptics guide. It needs iPhone 12 or later (not iPhone SE), Wi-Fi or cellular, and a supported song.
Turn it off in Settings > Accessibility > Music Haptics or from the audio card in Control Center.
Media vibration on Android
Android can vibrate with music, videos and games too. On a Pixel, turn off Media vibration, if listed, under Vibration & haptics. On newer Galaxy phones, lower the Media slider in Settings > Sounds and vibration > Vibration intensity.
Keyboard haptics
Why is my phone vibrating as I type? That’s keyboard feedback. On iPhone, turn off Haptic under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback. On a Pixel, turn off Keyboard vibration under Vibration & haptics (Gboard has its own setting); on a Galaxy, use System sound/vibration control.
Tracker Alerts: Your AirTag, a Borrowed Item or Someone Else’s
Why is my phone vibrating with a tracker alert? Often it’s Notify When Left Behind, which buzzes each time you leave your own AirTag. To stop it at home, add a trusted location under Find My > Items > [item] > Notify When Left Behind.
Someone else’s AirTag or Find My accessory moving with you triggers an iPhone alert such as “AirTag Found Moving With You.” Android 6 and later flags unknown tags too; tap the alert, then Play sound to find it without notifying the owner.
A borrowed item can set these off, Apple and Google note; if you feel unsafe, contact local law enforcement. A paired watch or earbuds can also trigger left-behind or companion-app alerts; check that app’s notification settings.
Why Is My Phone Vibrating So Loud, or Nonstop?
Why is my phone vibrating harder than before? Often it’s automatic: on Pixel 7 and later, Adaptive Vibration adjusts strength using the microphone and other sensors (Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics). Galaxy phones set each type’s strength under Vibration intensity.
Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration turns off every vibration, emergency alerts included. To quiet one alert type, change its pattern in Settings > Sounds & Haptics instead.
If an Android phone won’t stop vibrating, rule out apps in this order:
Restart and update
Restart, then install pending app and system updates.
Boot into safe mode
Pixel 6 and later: hold Power and Volume Up (Pixel 5a and earlier: Power alone), touch and hold Power off, tap OK. Galaxy: hold Side and Volume Down, touch and hold Power off, tap Safe mode. Safe mode can remove some Home screen widgets, so screenshot them first.
Turn airplane mode off
Pixel safe mode turns it on and blocks network alerts, so silence proves nothing yet.
Remove recent apps
If the buzzing stops, restart normally, then uninstall recent apps one at a time, restarting after each. Back up chats first: removing an app can delete its data.
Check the port, then the motor
Still buzzing? Then it’s not a downloaded app: look for a charging icon that flickers with nothing plugged in (a dirty or damaged port) and recheck the alerts above. Next, run a vibration test (Galaxy: Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics, or Settings > Device care > Diagnostics). Book a repair if it fails, or if the port is fine and the buzzing continues.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my phone vibrating for no reason?
Felt it in a pocket but see nothing new? It may be phantom vibration. In a 2010 BMJ survey (Rothberg et al.), 68% of 169 medical staff had felt a pager or phone vibrate when it hadn’t; turning off vibrate mode helped 75% of those who tried it. If you hear or see a buzz, something triggered it, so keep notification history on.
Why is my phone just vibrating instead of ringing?
It’s in Vibrate or Silent mode. On Android, press a volume button, tap the icon above the slider and choose Ring. An iPhone can still vibrate in Silent mode; turn that off with the Ring/Silent switch, the Action button (if set to Silent) or Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Silent mode.
Why is my phone vibrating by itself? Is it malware?
We found no Apple, Google or Samsung support page that lists random vibration as a malware sign. On Android, remove apps you don’t recognize and retest in safe mode. On iPhone, update iOS and check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for profiles you didn’t install.
Why is my phone vibrating every few minutes?
One alert is usually repeating: an emergency reminder, a left-behind item or a chatty app. Check history or Notification Center right after the next buzz, then mute that source.
Find the Trigger, Then Turn Off Only That
Read the pattern, let Android’s history catch the next buzz, and mute only that source. Next time you ask “why is my phone vibrating?”, it’s a quick check that keeps the alerts you need.
