Why Won’t My Phone Vibrate? Fix Haptics on iPhone and Android
Find out why calls, texts or one app stopped buzzing, fix the right iPhone or Android setting, and run Samsung's or Google's vibration test before you book a repair.

Why won’t my phone vibrate when everything else works? Usually it’s a setting, not the motor. On iPhone, one Accessibility switch turns off all vibration and one Haptics option decides when calls buzz; on Android, a toggle, a zeroed slider or one app’s notification channel can do the same.
Menu names vary by phone maker and version; if a label doesn’t match, search Settings for “vibration.”
Why Won’t My Phone Vibrate? Match the Symptom First
Ask someone to call you and then text you, and note which one doesn’t buzz:
- Nothing vibrates at all. Check the iPhone Accessibility switch or the Android master toggle.
- It buzzes when ringing, not on silent (or the reverse). See the iPhone Haptics option or Android’s ring-vibration setting.
- Calls buzz, but texts or some callers don’t. See per-sound patterns and call filters.
- One app stays still. Its notification channel is the suspect.
- Only at night or at set times. A scheduled Focus on iPhone or mode on Android is on.
- The buzz is weak, not gone. Look at intensity sliders and Adaptive Vibration.
Restart the phone and install any pending update first. If you’re still asking “why won’t my phone vibrate?” after every setting below, the hardware test settles it.
iPhone Won’t Vibrate at All? Check the Accessibility Vibration Switch
Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch and turn on Vibration. It’s a master switch: with it off, the iPhone doesn’t vibrate for anything, whatever Sounds & Haptics says.
Why won’t my phone vibrate for anything, even alarms? This switch is a likely reason, and it hides in Accessibility, away from the sound settings.
Apple’s vibration page notes that this switch also turns off vibrations for earthquake, tsunami and other emergency alerts. To cut down on buzzing, use the Haptics option below instead.
iPhone Won’t Vibrate on Silent or When Ringing: the Haptics Option
First, check whether Silent mode is on: use the Ring/Silent switch or, on iPhones with an Action button, Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Silent mode.
Then open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics. Apple’s iOS 17, 18 and 26 guides list four options:
| Haptics option | When ringing | In Silent mode |
|---|---|---|
| Always Play | Vibrates | Vibrates |
| Play in Silent Mode | No vibration | Vibrates |
| Don’t Play in Silent Mode | Vibrates | No vibration |
| Never Play | No vibration | No vibration |
For a buzz in both modes, choose Always Play. Still quiet on silent? Open Control Center, tap Focus and turn off Do Not Disturb if it’s highlighted.
iOS 16 and earlier use two switches at the top of Sounds & Haptics instead: Play Haptics in Ring Mode and in Silent Mode (Vibrate on Ring and on Silent on older versions). On iOS 16 to 18, also turn on System Haptics; Apple’s guides for those versions tie call and alert vibration to it. The iOS 27 guide drops the four options, so look for a setting that covers Silent mode.
iPhone Won’t Vibrate for Texts, Some Callers or at Night
Why won’t my phone vibrate for texts?
Each alert sound has its own vibration pattern; None means no buzz. Check Haptics at the top of Settings > Notifications > Messages > Sounds, and any contact’s own Text Tone. Hide Alerts (swipe left on a conversation) mutes one thread.
Why won’t my phone vibrate for some callers?
On iOS 26 and later, Settings > Apps > Phone can set unknown callers to Silence: they go to voicemail with no ring or vibration. On iOS 13 to 18, use the Silence Unknown Callers switch in Settings > Phone (Settings > Apps > Phone on iOS 18). Where your carrier supports it, flagged spam is silenced too.
Wearing an Apple Watch?
A locked or asleep iPhone sends notifications to a paired watch, unless the watch is locked. Your wrist gets the tap and the phone stays still; that’s normal.

Why won’t my phone vibrate for alarms?
Alarms still sound in Silent mode and Do Not Disturb, and each has its own Sound setting: tap the alarm in Clock, tap Sound and pick a vibration.
Why won’t my phone vibrate at night? Check Focus
In Settings > Focus, open each Focus (Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work) and check Set a Schedule and any automations; Sleep can also start from the Health app’s sleep schedule. Calls and alerts a Focus silences won’t vibrate.
Android Phone Won’t Vibrate? Check Toggles, Sliders and Modes
On Android, start at the volume panel: press a volume button and tap the ring-mode icon. Mute means no buzz; pick Vibrate or Ring.
Pixel
In Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics, turn on Use vibration & haptics and set Vibrate for calls to Always vibrate. Ringtone and notifications each have a pattern and an intensity slider (Sound & vibration > Ringtone > Vibration, and Notification > Vibration).
Weak, not missing? Adaptive Vibration (Pixel 7 and later) uses the microphone and other sensors to set strength, so a phone on a quiet desk may buzz softly. See Google’s Pixel vibration help.
Samsung Galaxy
Per Samsung’s checklist, Settings > Sounds and vibration shouldn’t be on Mute, Call and Notification vibration shouldn’t use the Silent pattern, and the Vibration intensity sliders (Call, Notifications, System, Media) shouldn’t sit at zero. In Sound mode, also turn on Vibrate while ringing (labels vary by One UI version).
Scheduled modes and Do Not Disturb
If the buzz vanishes only at night or at work, suspect a scheduled mode. Open Settings > Modes (older versions: Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb) and check each mode’s schedule and Notification filters; calls, messages or apps a mode blocks won’t vibrate. On a Galaxy, check the times in Modes and Routines.

Our guide to an Android phone that won’t ring covers each mode.
Only One App Won’t Vibrate? Fix Its Notification Channel
Since Android 8.0, every notification belongs to a channel. Once a channel exists, only you can change its sound and vibration, so an in-app vibrate toggle can’t override a channel set to Silent.
When one app has you asking “why won’t my phone vibrate?”, touch and hold one of its notifications and tap the settings icon. A category set to Silent instead of Alerting appears in the shade but won’t sound or vibrate.
The Phone app counts too: on a Pixel, if only calls stopped buzzing, check Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Phone > Incoming calls.
If several apps go quiet, restart in safe mode (on many phones, touch and hold Power off in the power menu). If vibration works there, a downloaded app is to blame. On iPhone, check the app’s Sounds switch in Settings > Notifications.
Why Won’t My Phone Vibrate With Every Setting On? Test the Motor
Once every switch above is on, these steps tell a settings problem from a hardware one.
Preview a pattern
Tap a vibration pattern under Ringtone to preview it, or turn on keyboard haptics and type.
Galaxy: Samsung’s test
In Samsung Members, open Phone diagnostics (under Discover or Support) and tap Vibration, or use Settings > Device care (Battery and device care on older One UI) > Diagnostics.
Pixel: Repair Diagnostics
On a Pixel 3 or later, go online, open the Phone app’s dial pad and dial*#*#7287#*#*
then follow the prompts. Skip unofficial codes found online.
Read the result
A buzz in the test but not for alerts means a setting. No buzz anywhere points to the motor.
If the motor failed: repair it, don’t reset
Why won’t my phone vibrate even in the test? Then the motor or its connection is the likely fault. Don’t open the phone yourself without repair experience: that compromises its water-resistance seal, and Google says self-repair is at your own risk.
A factory reset erases everything and won’t fix a failed motor. Make a full backup before you try one for a settings problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my phone vibrate on silent?
On iPhone, set Sounds & Haptics > Haptics to Always Play. On Android, set the volume panel to Vibrate, not Mute.
Why won’t my phone vibrate anymore when it used to?
Look for a new Focus or mode schedule, the Accessibility switch and Adaptive Vibration. If none fits, run the hardware test.
Why won’t my phone vibrate after an update?
Menus move between versions: Apple’s iOS 26 guide links lost call and alert vibration to Never Play, where its iOS 17 and 18 guides pointed to System Haptics. Recheck each switch under its current name.
Why won’t my phone vibrate when I type?
Keyboard vibration has its own switch: Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback > Haptic on iPhone, Keyboard vibration in Vibration & haptics on Pixel.
Can I fix a phone vibration motor myself?
Not without repair experience: it means opening a sealed, water-resistant phone. Use the maker’s repair service or an authorized shop.
Settings First, Motor Last
So why won’t my phone vibrate? Usually because of one setting. Check the master switch, the Haptics option or Android toggles and sliders, scheduled modes and the app’s notification settings, then test the motor.
