Steam Won’t Work on Mac? macOS Version, Rosetta and Game Fixes
Steam now needs macOS 12 Monterey. Check your Mac, then fix Rosetta, install and launch problems, and spot games that simply have no Mac version.

When Steam won’t work on Mac, the cause is often one Windows guides never mention: an unsupported macOS version, missing Rosetta 2, a Gatekeeper block, or a game with no Mac build. Check your macOS version first, since no reinstall fixes that, and save the clean reinstall for last.
Steam Won’t Work on Mac? Check Your macOS Version First
As of October 2026, Steam won’t work on Mac computers running anything older than macOS 12 Monterey. Valve ended support for macOS 11 Big Sur on October 15, 2025, and the client no longer runs there.
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac to see your version. The same window shows Chip on Apple silicon Macs and Processor on Intel ones. On macOS 12, the Software Update path below is its own pane in System Preferences.
Valve dropped 10.13 and 10.14 in February 2024 and 10.15 in February 2025, each time because core Steam features rely on an embedded Google Chrome that no longer works on older macOS. Its macOS 11 notice explains more; as of September 2026, no end date for macOS 12 has been announced.
| Mac | Oldest model that runs Monterey |
|---|---|
| MacBook Air | Early 2015 |
| MacBook Pro | Early 2015 |
| MacBook | Early 2016 |
| iMac | Late 2015 |
| iMac Pro | 2017 |
| Mac mini | Late 2014 |
| Mac Pro | Late 2013 |
Steam won’t work on Mac models older than these, however you reinstall it. Listed but still on Big Sur or earlier? Update macOS first. If your Mac can’t update, GeForce NOW (below) needs only macOS 10.15.

Apple Silicon Macs: Install Rosetta 2 When Steam or a Game Asks
Apple silicon Macs need Rosetta 2 to run apps built for Intel. Without it, Intel-only games won’t launch, and Steam won’t work on Mac either if any part of the client still needs Intel code. When prompted, click Install and enter your macOS user name and password; you need to be online.
Closed the prompt? Run this in Terminal:softwareupdate --install-rosetta
Rosetta then works in the background. Valve made the Steam Helper native on Apple silicon in June 2025 but hasn’t said that of the whole client, so check.
- Check an app’s type. Select it in Finder, choose File > Get Info and read Kind: Intel, Universal or Apple silicon, as Apple’s Rosetta page explains.
- The Intel-app warning. macOS may warn that an Intel app won’t work with a future macOS; it still runs today. Rosetta stays general-purpose through macOS 27, but from macOS 28 it covers only some older games Apple hasn’t named.
Steam Won’t Install on Mac, or macOS Says It’s Damaged
Steam won’t work on Mac right after you download it? Start with Valve’s basics: use an administrator account and get the installer only from store.steampowered.com/about. Drag Steam into Applications, launch it from there and let the first update finish. If it stalls or the install breaks, Valve’s fix is to run the installer again.
“Steam is damaged and can’t be opened”
This Gatekeeper alert, often naming steam_osx, means macOS found the app modified or corrupted. Delete it and download a fresh copy; a genuine one from Valve is signed and notarized and needs no override. If a fresh download still warns you, don’t use Open Anyway or strip the quarantine flag; download again or check your security software.
Steam Won’t Open on Mac or MacBook: Quit Every Steam Process
First rule out a Steam outage, which breaks sign-in and the store on every platform; our Steam won’t connect guide covers server checks and offline mode. Otherwise, a half-closed copy may still be running.
- Press Command-Q or choose Steam > Quit Steam.
- Frozen? Press Option-Command-Esc, select Steam and click Force Quit.
- In Activity Monitor, search “steam”, select each leftover such as Steam Helper, click the Stop (X) button and choose Quit, or Force Quit if it hangs.
- Unplug non-essential input devices, relaunch, and restart the Mac if needed.
Steam won’t work on Mac even after a restart? Check these before reinstalling:
Network and VPN
Restart the modem and router. Pause VPNs, IP filters, P2P clients and download managers, which Valve says can interfere.
Security software
Briefly pause third-party antivirus or firewall software, test Steam, then turn it back on.
macOS updates
Apple ships Mac graphics drivers inside macOS, so install pending updates in System Settings > General > Software Update.
Steam Won’t Download on Mac: Cache, Library Folder and Disk Errors
Sometimes Steam won’t work on Mac only when downloading. Update the client first (Steam > Check for Steam Client Updates), then:
- Clear the download cache in Steam > Settings > Downloads. Installed games stay; you’ll sign in again.
- Repair the library folder in Settings > Storage: open the “…” menu and choose Repair Folder.
- Verify the game’s files: right-click it in your Library, then Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Change the download region under Settings > Downloads.

When Steam Won’t Work on Mac for One Game: 32-Bit and Missing Builds
If the client runs fine, “Steam won’t work on Mac” may really mean one game won’t install or launch: each game has its own Mac support.
32-bit games. Since macOS 10.15 Catalina, 32-bit apps don’t run; you may see “[app name] needs to be updated” or a prohibitory symbol on the icon. Many developers never shipped 64-bit builds, Valve says, and since late 2023 the store no longer counts 32-bit-only games as Mac compatible.
No Mac build, or a high minimum. Counter-Strike 2 and ELDEN RING list no macOS version. Baldur’s Gate 3 has one but needs macOS 14.7.1 and an Apple M1. Look for the Apple icon and the macOS tab under System Requirements, or filter store search by macOS.

No Steam setting can add a missing Mac build. Realistic workarounds:
Boot Camp
Intel Macs only (roughly 2012 to 2020 models) and only Windows 10, which Microsoft stopped supporting in October 2025. Needs a full Windows 10 license and 64GB free (128GB recommended).
Parallels and Windows 11 Arm
Microsoft authorizes it for Arm Windows 11 Pro; its list currently names M1, M2 and M3 Macs. Both cost extra. x64 games are emulated, and Microsoft warns some games and DirectX 12 apps may not work.
CrossOver
$74 for a year of updates at the time of writing, 14-day trial. Runs some Windows games without Windows; results vary by game.
GeForce NOW
Streams supported Steam games you own, not every title. Needs macOS 10.15 or later (roughly a 2012 or newer Mac) and 15 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps.
Reinstall Steam on Mac Without Losing Your Games
When none of that helps and Steam won’t work on Mac at all, reinstall it. Valve says dragging Steam to the Trash isn’t a full uninstall; its Mac reinstall steps clear Steam’s data but keep your games.
SteamApps (steamapps on current installs) holds your games and local saves, though some games keep saves in userdata. Valve’s steps end by emptying the Trash, which is permanent, so keep the files in a backup folder until your games and saves load.
Quit Steam completely
Press Command-Q, then check Activity Monitor for leftovers.
Open Steam’s data folder
In Finder, hold Option, choose Go > Library, then open Application Support > Steam.
Move all but SteamApps
Drag everything else into a new folder on your desktop.
Install a fresh copy
Get a new installer from Valve’s site, drag Steam into Applications, choose Replace and let it update.
Check, then clean up
Once your games launch and your saves load, delete the backup folder.
Steam on Mac: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum macOS version for Steam?
macOS 12 Monterey, as of October 2026; below that, Steam won’t work on Mac at all. Valve has raised the floor three times since February 2024, so check its FAQ before buying an older Mac.
Does Steam work on Apple silicon Macs?
Yes, from M1 models to the MacBook Neo, on macOS 12 or later. M1 Macs shipped with Big Sur, and Steam won’t work on Mac models still running it until you update. Accept the Rosetta 2 prompt if one appears; each game still needs a Mac build.
Steam won’t work on Mac after a macOS 27 update. What now?
macOS 27 Golden Gate is Apple silicon only, and Valve’s notes don’t mention it yet. Let Steam update, quit every Steam process and relaunch, then try the clean reinstall or wait for the next Steam update.
Rule Out the Mac-Only Causes First
When Steam won’t work on Mac, check the macOS version, then Rosetta and Gatekeeper, then downloads and the game’s own Mac support. Reinstall last, keeping SteamApps and your saves safe.
