Why Is My Game Muted When Everything Else Has Sound?
Only the game is silent? Match the symptom, then check in-game sliders, the Volume mixer, output routing, call ducking, phone mute toggles and OBS capture.

YouTube plays, Discord plays, and one game stays silent. If you’re asking why is my game muted while everything else has sound, the cause is narrow: the game’s settings, how your PC or phone treats that one app, or where its sound goes.
Usually nothing is broken: the game’s volume is off, Windows has muted it, or its audio goes to another device. Less often, a call ducks it or the game pauses when unfocused.
If nothing at all plays through your headset, see our gaming headset not working guide instead.
Why Is My Game Muted? Match the Symptom First
If only the game is silent, when it goes quiet often answers “why is my game muted?” faster than any setting:
| When the game is silent | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| From the moment it launches | In-game sliders or a Volume mixer mute |
| In your headset, but a TV or speaker plays it | In-game or per-app output device |
| After a headset swap | Game still tied to the old device |
| Only during a voice call | Windows or Discord ducking |
| Only when you alt-tab | Background pause or mute |
| Only in recordings or streams | OBS capture source |
| On an iPhone or Android phone | Silent mode, Media volume or a launcher mute |
Check the Game’s Own Audio Menu Before Windows
Plenty of “why is my game muted” cases end here. Open the game’s Audio or Sound settings, not just the launcher’s:
Master and channel sliders
Master at zero silences everything, even with Music and Effects at full. Some menus add a separate mute checkbox.
Mute keys and background options
Look for a mute key binding and a mute-when-unfocused option.
Output device dropdown
Set it to Default or your current device; a game set to a specific device plays only there.
If every in-game slider is up, the answer to “why is my game muted?” is probably in Windows.
Windows Volume Mixer: A Muted App or the Wrong Output
Windows keeps a separate volume, mute and output device for each app, which can override the system volume. Microsoft’s fix for app audio not working while system sounds work starts here:
- On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. On Windows 10, right-click the taskbar Volume icon and choose Open Volume mixer.
- Find the game under Apps (Applications on Windows 10), unmute it, and raise its slider and the System slider (Device on Windows 10).
- On Windows 11, open the game’s entry and set its Output device to Default or your current device. The page’s Reset button returns every app to the default device and volume.
On Windows 10, the per-app device lives in Settings > System > Sound > Advanced sound options: set the game’s Output to Default, or press Reset to clear every override, and check the default device in the Sounds dialog’s Playback tab.
Is the game playing to a monitor or TV?
Microsoft notes that a monitor without built-in speakers gives no sound when set as the output; if only the game points at it, only the game goes quiet. The taskbar volume arrow changes only the default device; fix a per-app setting in Volume mixer.

In Settings > Sound > Audio Output, check Output Device. With a headset on the controller, set Output to Headphones to All Audio; Chat Audio sends game sound to the TV. Options vary by setup.
Why Is My Game Muted Only Sometimes?
After plugging in or unplugging a headset
Per Microsoft’s documentation, apps built on the low-level WASAPI audio API follow a new default device only if their developers added support. Restart the game to pick it up.
Why is my game muted during a Discord or Teams call?
Windows can lower other audio during a call. Press Win + R, type mmsys.cpl, open the Communications tab and pick Do nothing (the default reduces other sounds by 80%).
Discord ducks too: in User Settings > Voice & Video, set Attenuation to 0% or turn off When others speak and When I speak (labels may vary).
Per Microsoft’s stream attenuation documentation, audio started after the call began isn’t lowered, so a game launched after joining can sound normal.
Why is my game muted when I alt-tab?
Some games pause on purpose when they lose focus; in Unity games, the developer’s Run In Background setting decides this. Many games add a mute-in-background option; if yours has no such setting, the silence is probably by design.
Still Silent on PC? Escalate in This Order
If the mixer looks right and you’re still asking “why is my game muted?”, work down this list and test the game after each step:
Restart the game, then the PC
Close the game and its launcher fully, reopen it, and restart the PC if needed.
Rule out exclusive control
If the only sound you hear is a music app started before the game, it may hold the device in exclusive mode. Close it, or in mmsys.cpl open your Playback device’s Properties > Advanced and untick Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
Match the audio format
In the same Advanced tab, try 24 bit, 48000 Hz as the Default Format, and match the game’s speaker setup (stereo or 5.1/7.1) to your device.
Turn off audio enhancements
Microsoft lists this among its fixes for quiet sound. On Windows 11, select your output device in Settings > System > Sound and set Audio enhancements to Off. On Windows 10, tick Disable all enhancements (or Disable all sound effects) under Sounds > Playback > Properties > Enhancements.
Update the audio driver last
Install the current driver from your PC or motherboard maker. Other apps share it, so a game-only silence is rarely a driver fault.
Why Is My Game Muted on iPhone or Android?
On any phone, open the game’s own settings first: many mobile games have separate Sound and Music toggles.
iPhone: Silent mode, and why some games ignore it
With the game on screen, press volume up. Then check the audio output (AirPlay) button in Control Center, in case sound is going to AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker.
Flip the Ring/Silent switch toward the screen so no orange shows; with an Action button, press and hold it (if it’s set to Silent Mode) or use Control Center. Some games ignore Silent mode and others go quiet. Apple’s developer documentation explains why: the default SoloAmbient and the Ambient categories obey the switch, Playback ignores it, and each developer picks one.
Focus and Do Not Disturb silence calls and notifications, so they’re unlikely to mute a game.
Android and Samsung: Media volume and the Gaming Hub mute
On Android, the usual answer to “why is my game muted?” is Media volume: it covers games, separately from Ring and Notification volume. Raise it with a volume button while the game plays, and check Play media to for a Bluetooth device.
On Samsung, a slash through the Gaming Hub Mute icon in My games means game sound is off; tap it. Samsung says this doesn’t apply to Instant Play games, and menus vary by model. Separate app sound (Settings > Sounds and vibration) can also send one game to earbuds left in a bag.

If the whole phone sounds weak, see our guide to fixing a phone that’s too quiet.
Game Audio Not Working in OBS? Fix the Capture Source
If you hear the game but the recording is silent, OBS’s Desktop Audio is probably capturing a different device. OBS’s application audio capture guide lists the fixes:
- Tick Capture Audio. Since OBS 30.1, Game Capture and Window Capture have a Capture Audio (BETA) checkbox.
- Or add Application Audio Capture. It needs OBS 28+ on Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11.
- Disable Desktop Audio in Settings > Audio while using app sources, to avoid echo.
- Fall back to VB-Cable (only from its maker, VB-Audio). Send the game to CABLE Input (Volume mixer on Windows 11, Advanced sound options on Windows 10) and add an Audio Input Capture on CABLE Output. To keep hearing the game, open CABLE Output in the Sounds dialog’s Recording tab and tick Listen to this device under Properties > Listen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my game muted when YouTube, Spotify and Discord all have sound?
Check the game’s own sliders, then its Volume mixer entry for a mute or another output device.
Why is my game volume not working even at 100%?
Several sliders affect it: in-game Master, the game’s mixer slider and System. Raise all three, then try turning off Audio enhancements.
Why is my game muted on iPhone when other games have sound?
Each game picks an audio category, and the default one follows the Ring/Silent switch. Turn Silent mode off and press volume up in the game.
Why is my game muted after I unplugged my headset?
Some games stay on the device they started with. Restart the game, and check its in-game output device.
Why is my game muted on PS5?
Check the controller’s MUTE button: if it’s blinking, your mic and all speaker output are off, so press it again. Then check Output to Headphones.
