iPhone Won’t Install Apps? Fix Waiting, Crashing and Delete Problems
Stuck on 'Waiting', Get does nothing, or apps crash or won't delete? Check Apple's status, your connection, account holds, Screen Time and storage, in that order.

When your iPhone won’t install apps, the App Store rarely says why: a download sits on “Waiting”, Get spins and stops, or “Unable to Download App” appears.
Paths are for iOS 18 and later. Outside the US, Cellular may read Mobile Data or Mobile Service, and Payment & Shipping may read Payment & Delivery, as in Australia.
iPhone Won’t Install Apps? Start With What You See
Most of the time an iPhone won’t install apps because of an Apple outage, a connection the App Store can’t use, a payment or age hold, a Screen Time or work restriction, or low storage.
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| “Waiting…” or a cloud icon that does nothing | Stalled or paused download, pending approval, low storage, app no longer in the App Store |
| “Unable to Download App”, or Get does nothing | Outage, connection, or a payment or age hold |
| Downloads only on Wi-Fi, updates stall | App Store off for cellular, App Downloads set to ask, Low Data Mode |
| No App Store icon, or installs blocked | Icon in App Library, Screen Time or work-phone restriction |
| Installs, then crashes or won’t open | Outdated app or iOS, a bad install |
| No Delete App option | Core Apple app, Screen Time or MDM |
Rule Out an Apple Outage, Your Connection and the Clock
Start outside your iPhone and work inward:
- Check Apple’s System Status page. If App Store or Apple Account shows an issue, wait.
- Load a website, toggle Airplane Mode, then try another Wi-Fi network or cellular.
- Turn off any VPN and pause third-party security or filtering apps.
- For cellular downloads, turn on App Store under Settings > Cellular.
- Set Settings > General > Date & Time to automatic.
- Install any update in Settings > General > Software Update.
If your iPhone won’t install apps or updates over cellular but works on Wi-Fi, turn off Low Data Mode in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options; it pauses automatic updates. Also check App Downloads in Settings > Apps > App Store: Ask If Over 200 MB or Always Ask makes large apps wait for your OK or for Wi-Fi.
If calls fail too, the problem is likely your carrier, SIM or signal; see our guide for when an iPhone won’t make calls.
If nothing downloads on any network, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It erases saved Wi-Fi networks, passwords and manually added VPN settings, resets the phone’s name to “iPhone” and may turn off Data Roaming, so note these first and check roaming afterward if you’re abroad.
Tap only Reset Network Settings: Delete All eSIMs in the same menu removes your mobile plan, and Erase All Content and Settings wipes the iPhone.
Stuck on “Waiting” or a Cloud Icon That Does Nothing
If your iPhone won’t install apps and shows a dimmed “Waiting…” icon, touch and hold it and choose Prioritize Download, a step from Apple’s checklist for apps that won’t download, or Resume Download if it’s offered.
Still stuck? Restart the iPhone. If nothing changes, choose Cancel Download from the same menu and get the app again.
Ask to Buy on? A child’s iPhone won’t install apps until a parent approves each request.
Just updated iOS? An update short on space can remove apps temporarily and reinstall them afterward; leave the phone on Wi-Fi.
Storage nearly full? An iPhone won’t install apps it has no room for. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and free clearly more than the app’s listed size, since installing needs temporary room.

A cloud icon? The app was offloaded, by you or automatically by Offload Unused Apps in Settings > Apps > App Store. Its data stayed; tap the icon to reinstall, if the app is still in the App Store.
iPhone Won’t Install Apps Even When They’re Free? Check Your Apple Account
If Get spins and stops on a working connection, check your account: your iPhone won’t install apps while a payment or age hold is on it. Apple says you might need a valid payment method on file even for free apps; add one in Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping.
“Billing problem with a previous purchase” or “Verification Required” means an unpaid balance, which can block even free downloads. In Payment & Shipping, tap Fix Payment Information, then Try Again, or add another method; with Family Sharing, the failed charge may be the organizer’s. Enter card details only in Settings, never via a link in a message.
Apps installed with someone else’s Apple Account, such as a previous owner’s, may ask for that account’s password to update. If the iPhone is “associated with another Apple Account”, wait the days shown to redownload purchases.
In some countries, regions and US states, 18+ apps need adult confirmation via existing account information, a credit card or an ID scan, not debit or gift cards. Check Settings > [your name] > Personal Information > Age Confirmation.
In some places, if you’re under 18, your iPhone won’t install apps until your account is in a Family Sharing group with an age-confirmed adult; ask a parent to add you.
The app needs a newer iOS
Check Compatibility on the app’s App Store page. iPhone XR and XS models stop at iOS 18, so an older iPhone won’t install apps that need iOS 26 or later (iPhone 11, SE 2nd generation and newer can run it). If you downloaded the app before with your Apple Account, try it from your purchased apps; you may be offered the last compatible version.
Screen Time, Ask to Buy and Work Phones That Block Installs
Screen Time is a common reason an iPhone won’t install apps with no clear error. On your own phone, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases and set Installing Apps to Allow; labels vary slightly by iOS version. The age-rating limit (4+ to 18+ on iOS 26 and later) under App Store, Media, Web & Games can block apps too.
On iOS 27, parents manage this in Settings > Family > [child] > Apps & Websites, under App Store or Restrictions, where Ask to Buy also lives. If either phone runs an earlier iOS, use Settings > Screen Time and tap the child’s name.
No App Store icon? Swipe down and search for it, or check App Library; it may only be off the Home Screen. If it’s missing there too, a restriction is hiding it.
If a work or school iPhone won’t install apps, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management: a management profile there means IT may block installs and hide the App Store.
If a parent’s or employer’s limit is why your iPhone won’t install apps, ask them to allow the app rather than working around it with another App Store region, sideloading or a VPN.
Apps Install but Crash, Close or Won’t Open
This isn’t a case where your iPhone won’t install apps: the app installs, then closes on launch, freezes or keeps kicking you out. Work through these in order:
Force close and reopen
Face ID models: swipe up from the bottom, pause, then swipe the app up. Home-button models: double-click Home.
Restart the iPhone
Hold the side button and either volume button, then drag the slider; Home-button models use only the side button. Then reopen the app.
Update the app and iOS
App Store > profile picture > App Updates, then Settings > General > Software Update.
Offload and reinstall
Offload App in iPhone Storage removes the app but keeps its data. Tap the icon to reinstall.
Delete and redownload
Apple warns you might lose data stored in the app, so back it up first.
Contact the developer
Or request a refund if you bought it recently.
These follow Apple’s guide for apps that stop responding, plus an offload step before deleting, since it keeps the app’s data. A dimmed icon that won’t open usually means Screen Time is blocking it or a time limit ran out.

Can’t Delete or Offload an App? Four Things to Check
To delete an app, touch and hold its icon, then tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Remove from Home Screen only moves it to App Library.
A core Apple app
Phone, Settings, Messages, Camera, Photos, Safari and App Store can’t be deleted, except that in the EU the last five can (and Safari in Japan). Calculator, Notes, Weather and many others can.
Deleting Apps is restricted
Under Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases, set Deleting Apps to Allow. On a child’s phone, ask the parent.
A work or school phone
An MDM restriction can block removing apps. Only the administrator can lift it.
Offload App is missing
If iPhone Storage doesn’t show Offload App or Delete App, suspect a core app or the restrictions above.
Deleting an app doesn’t cancel its in-app subscription; cancel that separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
My iPhone won’t install apps even though Wi-Fi works. Why?
Working Wi-Fi rules out only one cause. Check System Status, payment details, Installing Apps in Screen Time, free storage and any VPN.
Do I need a payment method to download free apps?
Sometimes; Apple says some free apps may need one. If your iPhone won’t install apps after a card was declined, an unpaid balance is the likely block.
Does offloading an app delete my data?
No. Offloading keeps its documents and data for when you reinstall. Deleting removes the app and its data from the iPhone, though data the app synced to iCloud usually stays.
Why won’t my iPhone update apps?
Check that App Updates is on in Settings > Apps > App Store and that Low Data Mode isn’t pausing updates. To update by hand: App Store, profile picture, App Updates, Update All.
Still Stuck? What to Tell Apple Support
If your iPhone won’t install apps after all this, contact Apple Support about account or billing holds, or the developer about one app that keeps crashing. Note the exact error and your iOS version first.
On Android, Google Play Help has its own download checklist. More fixes, such as an Android screen that won’t auto-rotate, are in our mobile guides.
